Spring into Style! Essentials you need now!
Mood: Laid-back polish. This image of fashion journalist Camille Charriere, captures the inspiration for my Spring closet.
Must-have: Cropped jeans with released and/or frayed hem is this seasons non-negotiable!
Seeking: Cotton shirts moins lycra in blue, white and clean stripes.
Closet Staple: Loafers! The new new is the crushed back babouches but being old school I will also stick with my classic Saba’s!
Accessory: Forget the “it” bag! The petite purse and insouciant pouch is where its at!
For me, Spring signals a closet edit. Its the time to take stock before adding new link pieces to keep my look current into Summer and beyond.
Put your ultra tight skinnies on the back burner and look for ankle length jeans with either a straight silhouette or one with a slight kick flare. Note: The key word here is ankle! Jeans that hang over your shoes are pretty much a no no! Another notable change is the wash; Rips, tears and bleached denim make way for a smarter more uniform mid blue rinse. The concession is the hem which is released to reveal the faded hemline and perhaps a frayed hem. Current Elliott’s cropped straight ‘let out hem’ receives rave reviews!
Shirting is the absolute essential this season and there is an array of silhouettes to choose from. Think menswear in pinstripes, white or pale blue, with exaggerated cuffs. I am not too keen on the more voluminous offerings which tend to be as wide as they are long but I do like longer lengths such as M.i.H’s oversized shirts which pair beautifully with the seasons wider pants. For office through to evening, check out Theory’s lovely silk blouses which are the best quality for the price point. Here are a few of my current fav’s!
I have invested in this shirt and have to say it is particularly versatile. It is the complimentary length for leggings and a perfect vacation piece when teamed with denim cutoffs or used as a cover-up!
Silk black and white stripe shirts like this one are in high demand and there is no wonder! They work with everything! Nightingale shirt here
…..also love this cotton version
Last year I bought a similar style to this from Banana Republic and get multitudes of compliments every time I wear it. This cotton version by Madewell is a great alternative and, at $80, a scoop! Available here.
The fashion set will tell you the block heel is this seasons game changer but unswayed by trends I am heading towards a classic espadrille and loafer. Having tired of the ballerina I started to invest in Italian made loafers a few years ago and find the Saba by Salvatore Ferragamo my go-to. Gucci has amazing espadrilles that fit like a dream as do J Crew (above) who source from Spain. One trend I will be investing in is babouches which can be worn as full on loafers or with a crushed back! I particularly like this option from Massimo Dutti in black or tan $120 (below).
Last but not least lets not forget the finer details of accessorizing and the old adage of less is more! I have more than enough purses so am seeking just a simple tote or pouch for every day essentials: smart phone, keys, lipstick, tissues, credit card, driving license. For interest choose a metallic or embellished. Check out my wishlist!
