As a new political era dawns at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue the arrival of an incoming First Lady and two First Daughters will inevitably signal a change of sartorial influence especially as all three are pretty easy on the eye! If the inauguration is anything to go by, the style direction leans toward an understated glamour we have not witnessed for a few decades and I for one am ready!
The First Lady, Melania, chose a monotone (a women after my own heart) ensemble in powder blue designed by Ralph Lauren! Clean lined and simple the cashmere shift dress created a backdrop for the beautifully cut bolero jacket which perfectly complimented her slim figure. The 3/4 length sleeves called for that long forgotten accessory – long gloves! Jackie O eat your heart out!
For the inauguration ball Melania donned a gown she collaborated on with designer Hervé Pierre, formally of Carolina Herrera. This beautiful dress was off the shoulder in a subtle shade of ivory. The tie belt accentuated her waist while a leaf shaped frill ran diagonally on the bodice and along the front leg split. Some called it “daring” but I loved it!
Historically First Ladies have come under intense scrutiny for their dress sense but I feel sure Melania’s modeling background will serve her well for navigating the finer nuances of dressing for the occasion. Perhaps, given the political climate, her sartorial choices will come as a welcome distraction and I am looking forward to style watching her time at The Whitehouse!
